In this paper, a modified mass source method is proposed to simulate interactions between a piled baffle penetrated breakwater and tsunami-like solitary waves. The studies of interactions between the tsunami-like solitary waves and the piled baffle penetrated breakwaters are rare in the literature. Satisfactory overall agreement between the numerical and experimental results is observed, which demonstrates that the method is suitable for simulating FSI problems in ocean engineering.Ī piled baffle penetrated breakwater is a widely used free surface type breakwater that is prone to instabilities under extreme waves, such as tsunamis. Finally, the method is employed to reproduce an experiment that investigates the interaction between a dam-break flow and a floating box. Several two- and three-dimensional cases of multi-DoF are simulated, and the recommended iteration stop condition is summarised. Various interface capture schemes as well as mesh motion schemes are considered. Cooperating with the incompressible two-phase flow solver included in OpenFOAM®, the present method is capable of simulating fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problems, in which strong coupling is ensured through the outer loop of the PIMPLE algorithm. The initial value of the under-relaxation factor at each time step is evaluated from the values of the two previous time steps, the predictor, and the first corrector. Aitken’s dynamic under-relaxation (ADUR) scheme is used to reduce the time to convergence. This second-order method involves the use of one predictor and several correctors, thus requiring an iteration process during each time step. Higher power-take off (PTO) damping is also beneficial in extracting increased energy from waves.Īn extended variable-time-step Adams–Bashforth–Moulton (ABM) method is presented for obtaining the solution of six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) rigid body motion. The efficiency of the device decreases with the increase in wave height, although it increases with the wave period. The simulation results confirm that effective power can be generated from the wave energy device. Further, simulations have been carried out with the device placed near to the bottom of the numerical wave tank in order establish the energy extraction potential. The simulated surface elevation of a wave has been validated against the reported wave tank experimental data in order to provide confidence in the modeling outcome. The innovative concept is based on utilizing the pressure differential under the crest and trough of a wave to drive flow through a pipe. OpenFoam wave modeling solver interFoam has been employed in order to investigate the energy extraction capability of the wave energy device.
